I'm really thrilled to see the new Cooking Academy website. It's so great to see pictures used so well. And it was such a pleasure to shoot, especially with great direction (and modelling!) from Andy Hunt, MD of Amberjack.
Kumud Gandhi is a truly inspirational culinary guru, who has a tremendous depth of knowledge that she brings to her students in a way that makes it a simple and very enjoyable process. She says she has a "scientific" approach, but it felt more like expertise made into comfortable, easy common-sense. Kumud also radiates this kind of warmth and calm that turns a kitchen full of apron-wearing, sauce-burning, flour-covered students into master chefs for a day. There's a special comfort and thrill, too, in cooking in a group. It seems to appeal to a primitive, family feeling that might go back to the neolithic in all of us.
My job here was to capture the fun and rapture of a day with the Cooking Academy, using "real" students as models. Andy's brief was to find the moments of real emotion and pleasure from a day at Kumud's beautiful home kitchen in Rickmansworth. And it was one of those shoots when it felt easy to do. The moments just happened...there were loads of them.
